Thorsten Goldberg – Solo public art project

LOCATION: North East Transit Garage (NETG), Edmonton, Canada

Thorsten Goldberg’s 53º30’N is the selected artwork for Edmonton’s North East Transit Garage (NETG). The work will be mounted on the lanterns crowning the building. 53º30’N is a collection of topographic models of mountain-landscapes from different parts of the world, which are on the same latitude as Edmonton.
In his concept, Goldberg describes a journey to “undiscovered” locations – “by strictly following the path of latitude in a westerly direction, I refer to the popular game of spinning a globe—or these days a digital on-screen earth — and waiting excitedly to see which location the finger or cursor will point to when the globe stops.”

Thorsten Goldberg was chosen as the artist who would deliver one of the City of Edmonton’s largest public art projects, complimenting their new 7-hectare transit facility. The project will consist of 5 massive polygonal topographical depictions of places in the world that are at equal latitudes as Edmonton, all fabricated out of stainless steel. NETG is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

Thorsten’s work is provoking in a way that connects the participant with his intent to serve as the voice of many. He embraces public engagement and constructive discourse while planning his works—and with a thoughtful mind he listens to all sides and then he acts, bringing in the right team to get it done.
