With this exhibition Deschler gallery honors the International Women’s Day on 8 March starting off this year as an official holiday in Berlin. With more than 100 years of history, the day reflects the numerous historical upheavals of the 20th century. Emerging from a conference of socialist women in 1910, the International Women’s Day was first proclaimed the following year, later banned by Nazis and reintroduced in the GDR as a socialist holiday. in 1977, the UN proclaimed March 8 as the “United Nation’s Day for the Rights of Women and World Peace”. Initially linked to women’s electoral rights, starting in the 1970s, it became an important date for activists working for women’s full equality.
Together the artists create a panopticon that sheds light on the complex ever shifting cultural perception of woman, their social role and ideological positioning in the contemporary world.
Seet van Hout’s work is also part of our current gallery exhibition “The X Part II” at WHITECONCEPTS Gallery running through 28 April.
