From May through August, works of Elmar Hess and Nikolaus Eberstaller will be part of the GELD – WAHN – SINN (engl. MONEY – DELUSION – SENSE / MONEY – MADNESS) exhibition of the Collection Haupt, dealing with the topic of money in different ways.
What are we willing to do for money? Has money become the religion of the today’s time? The asset distribution is insane, the mechanisms of international financial markets are marbled with delusions of grandeur. Wild speculations, unscrupulousness, and manipulation are is the order of the day. The absurd excesses of the art market in their complexity and pricing are not easy to understand. The exhibition deals not only with the relationship between finance and art as well as economic, cultural and social issues but also with the question of the importance and the value of spending money in our lives. It questions existing systems and shows utopias and visions of the future.
The collection of the Berlin copyright attorney Dr. Stefan Haupt comprises almost 300 works dealing with the topic of money in various ways and in various media. In addition to photographs, objects, digital art, sound and video works, there are currencies, shares or other designs of exchange platforms created by artists. The exhibition presents a large part of the collection, supplemented by borrowed works.
The individual works examine political events as well as current and historical upheavals – for example, the noisily infinitely circling coin in Esther Shalev-Gerz’ video refers to the introduction of the euro. In Maximilian Roganov’s work, Super Mario goes on the hunt for a Bitcoin coin. Many works criticize the capitalist financial system and point to social grievances. They deal with questions of the art market and the real living conditions of the artists.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a supporting programme of performances, discussions and film screenings, including actions by Nikolaus Eberstaller, Ralf Kopp, Christin Lahr and Philipp Valenta as well as the fictional United Transnational Republics. Following the film screening of “Master of the Universe” (R: Marc Bauder, 2013), Rainer Voss, one of Germany’s former leading investment bankers, will give an insight into the international financial industry. Von Mai bis August werden Elmar Hess und Nikolaus Eberstaller in der GELD – WAHN – SINN Ausstellung der Sammlung Haupt, die sich mit dem Thema Geld in verschiedenen Weisen auseinandersetzt, vertreten sein.
Was sind wir bereit, für Geld zu tun? Ist Geld zur Religion der heutigen Zeit geworden? Die Vermögensverteilung ist irrsinnig, die Mechanismen internationaler Finanzmärkte sind durchwachsen von Größenwahn. Wilde Spekulationen, Skrupellosigkeit und Manipulation sind an der Tagesordnung. Auch die absurden Auswüchse des Kunstmarktes sind in ihrer Komplexität und Preisbildung nur schwer zu durchschauen. Die von Lena Fließbach kuratierte Ausstellung beschäftigt sich nicht nur mit dem Verhältnis von Finanzen und Kunst sowie wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und sozialen Fragen, sondern auch mit der Frage nach der Bedeutung und dem Wert, den Geld für unser Leben hat. Sie hinterfragt bestehende Systeme und zeigt Utopien und Visionen auf.
Die Sammlung des Berliner Urheberrechtsanwalts Dr. Stefan Haupt umfasst knapp 300 Arbeiten, welche sich mit dem Thema Geld auf vielfältige Art und Weise und in verschiedenen Medien auseinandersetzen. Neben Fotografien, Objekten, Digital Art, Sound- und Videoarbeiten finden sich von Künstler_innen geschaffene Währungen, Aktien oder Entwürfe für Tauschplattformen. Die Ausstellung präsentiert einen Großteil der Sammlung, ergänzt durch Leihgaben.
Die einzelnen Arbeiten untersuchen politische Ereignisse sowie aktuelle und historische Umbrüche – so bezieht sich zum Beispiel die geräuschvoll unendlich kreisende Münze in Esther Shalev-Gerz’ Video auf die Euro-Einführung. In Maximilian Roganovs Arbeit begibt sich Super Mario auf die Jagd nach einer Bitcoin Münze. Viele Werke üben Kritik am kapitalistischen Finanzsystem und weisen auf soziale Missstände hin. Sie beschäftigen sich mit Fragen des Kunstmarktes und den realen Lebensbedingungen der Künstler_innen.
Begleitend zur Ausstellung findet ein Rahmenprogramm aus Performances, Diskussionen und Filmvorführungen statt, darunter Aktionen von Nikolaus Eberstaller, Ralf Kopp, Christin Lahr und Philipp Valenta sowie der fiktiven United Transnational Republics. Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung von „Master of the Universe“ (R: Marc Bauder, 2013) gibt Rainer Voss, einer der ehemals führenden Investmentbanker Deutschlands, Einblick in das internationale Finanzgewerbe.
