Greg Murr examines the aesthetics and implications of various systems that shape our everyday reality yet remain outside our everyday consciousness. He combines painting and drawing in airy compositions that function as philosophical inquiries into the flux of the natural world. In a series of work about bodies of water, Murr abstracts cartographic and satellite images of rivers into watercolor streaks that create a sense of dynamism and produce what he sees as an environmentally specific vocabulary for each body of water. In a series of work titled “The Usual Politics,” Murr depicts dogs amidst strands of pearls. The seemingly discordant imagery deals in metaphor, juxtaposing the animalistic tendencies of humans with the consumer-driven impulses that govern contemporary society.
Greg Murr’s work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, including the Austin Museum of Art (2011), the Arkansas Art Center (2008) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (2005), and is in numerous public and private collections.
