WHITECONCEPTS Gallery is delighted to present “The X (Anniversary)”. With this group show, the Berlin-based gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary.

“The X (Anniversary) Part I” starts from February 7 – 25, Part II will be held from April 4 – 28. The two exhibitions will present a fine selection of works by 25 artists with whom the gallery has worked throughout this intensive decade. 10 years represent the passage of time, but also the imprint of a place within this time.

WHITECONCEPTS gives priority to issues concerning perceptions of space and regards this notion as a unifying principle of artistic positions. In close cooperation with artists, primarily socially critical projects are presented, which show diverse and forward-looking perspectives. Building on the avant-garde power of art, the gallery has built an international network. WHITECONCEPTS is also a regular publisher of artist catalogs and monographs.

WHITECONCEPTS was founded in 2009 by the curator and art manager Nicole Loeser. The curatorial commitment has always been to explore artistic methods, to stimulate debates about current artistic practices, discourses and theories. The gallery focuses primarily on conceptual art and an interdisciplinary engagement with various media, including visual and sculptural works, installations, performances and public interventions.

So far, Nicole Loeser and her team have curated more than 80 exhibitions and numerous art projects and participated in 30 international art fairs.

Characteristic of André Wagner’s photographs is his intensive examination of the content and motifs of his images. Time and metaphysics play a special role. He breaks with the conventions of seeing and mental, often hasty classification.

His starting point is not the re-enchantment of the world, but the rediscovery of the still existing magical moments that are unlearned in today’s streamlined world. For him, these moments, which incidentally can last for hours, are particularly evident in India. Therefore, since 2004 he returns to the Indian subcontinent again and again and sets out to search for the essence of this culture and its foundations.

A bridge is to beat its art, which makes it possible to visualize abstracts such as spirituality or grandeur in the figurative. However, the imagery of the artist does not want to preach or proselytize, but to connect the material with the transcendental on a rather empathic level and to communicate the unspeakable in human existence.

Thorsten Goldberg’s new work “24 kt”, completed in autumn 2018, is a bird’s nest, cast of solid fine-gold twigs, that serves as a conceptual foundation for the new Fuchsberg primary school in the district of Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The golden nest is kept in a bullet proof glass safe in the school building visible for the children. A contractual agreement specifies the terms and conditions under which the school may open the glass-safe and destroy the nest after a minimum of 14 years to convert the proceeds into something that a community of students, teachers and parents commonly agreed upon. As such and due to its economic value the golden nest also serves as an investment for future needs of the school.

Thorsten Goldberg won the competition in 2014 organized by the district office Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf, education, culture, social and facility management for the Land of Berlin, Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, Dept. V. The execution was realized by Department of Culture, Gallery M. The new school was built by HerbstKunkler.Architekten

Already four years ago, in October 2014 the jury decided to implement the work “24 kt” of Thorsten Goldberg for the new Fuchsberg elementary school. For a fixed amount of the competition budget Thorsten Goldberg bought fine gold. From this he cast solid small branches and twigs and  built a bird’s nest, like those birds of prey or crows build it. With the opening of the new elementary school, the golden nest is now permanently presented in a glass showcase inside the school building. The showcase is a wall built-in highly secured glass safe that can be viewed from inside and outside.

Thorsten Goldberg realized numerous projects in public space throughout Germany and other countries. He taught at various art academies such as the Art Academy Münster, AdBK Munich, UfG Linz/AT and last as professor of media arts at the Muthesius Art Academy in Kiel.

An alternative way to capture such a wide array of activities in a single shot would have been to use a fish-eye lens, Korfmann says, but that would have distorted the edges of the image. Only by painstakingly assembling dozens of discrete high-resolution images could she create a final image with such remarkable clarity. Many of the photographs show dozens of people, each of whom Korfmann shot individually and then combined into a single master shot. But Korfmann rejects the idea that using such digital legerdemain is somehow “cheating.”

Blanca Soto gallery is delight to present the sixth exhibition of PSJM in Madrid. PSJM presents “Formas para un mundo perfecto”(“Shapes for a perfect world”), PSJM presents three reliefs of a court produced with noble materials, as the wood of mahogany or the bronze and the stainless steel. These sculptures of wall accompany of pages of a fictitious diary in which there are narrated the motivations and creative processes that help to prepare these beautiful forms. in PSJM’s work different disciplines come together: literature, sculpture, design and philosophical reflection. “Formas para un mundo perfecto” (2017): “There’s no injustice in the world. Humans relationships comes in harmony and in peace. After the globalization there’s nothing to fight for, nothing to criticize, nothing to be worry about it. Finally we can get back to the the comforting and beautiful shapes”.

PSJM is a creativity team  composed by Cynthia Viera (Las Palmas G.C., 1973) and Paul San José (Mieres, 1969). PSJM appears as a ” marca de arte ” (” a brand of art”), appropriating this way of the procedures and strategies of the capitalism advanced to subvert his symbolic structures, a requirement to exclude the traditional suppositions on the artistic action.

PSJM has been included in the 100 most representative artists of the political international art in Art and Agenda: Political Art and Activism (Gestalten, Berlin, 2011). An exhibition to bring environmental problems into the public consciousness 

Four artists present their work in the Literary Cabinet of the Gran Canaria curated by PSJM with the aim of bringing environmental issues into public consciousness. The exhibition presents the works of Basurama, Luna Bengoechea, Carmela García y Santiago Morilla, all of them are actively focusing on ecological problems.

“Biotope”, in biology and ecology, refers to an area of uniform environmental conditions that provides vital space for a set of flora and fauna: a living environment. The term “Biotopias” is a neologism that PSJM proposes to poetically characterize aesthetic responses to the situation of the planetary urgency of taking action. Biotopías includes the meaning of biotope, but also relates to the “space theory” of Foucault in which, the French philosopher was distinguishing three classes of spaces: the Topías (the real and daily spaces), the Utopias (the ideal, not (real) spaces) and the Heterotopías (the real spaces, but separated from the daily life).

All the pieces of the exhibition have been created specifically for the occasion.

Four exhibitions:

In Love We Trash. Las Palmas GC it is the last one of a series of projects in which the group Basurama uses the plastic of waste to generate inflatable spaces. Two icons of the consumerist society, the carrier bag of the supermarket and the plastic of packing, are turned into raw material to build a big space based on air produced by fans.

The artist Moon Bengoechea presents ‘Elaeis guineensis’ shows a series of drawings combined with a light installation. It draws our attention to the loss of biodiversity, the disappearance of the habitat of species. Furthermore, it questions the environmental impacts to the pollution of the waters and the air provoked by manmade big fires and by the plantations of palm oil. His work is centered on discovering clean and elegantly finished poetics with certain aspects related to the many risks of our society.

The photographer Carmela García brings the ecofeminism point of view to the exhibition. Her series ‘Paradise’, realized in 2003,  wrapped one of the walls of the room from soil to roof, brings the poetical proclamation of a new world.

‘Locative Breathing’ is the work of Santiago Morilla where a sidecar welded to a bicycle consists of the production of a greenhouse. When visitors walk on the dredge they are closing an autonomous system of breathing. The pipe of breathing connects the mask of the cyclist with the interior of the greenhouse, which acts as a portable filter.

“BACKUP” – Solo Exhibition of Seet Van Hout

Seet van Hout (Nijmegen, 1957) has been working for months on the preparations for her monumental installation BACKUP, which will be on display in the patio of Museum Het Valkhof from 13 October. In her work she visualizes the complexity of memory: how chaos and structure alternate and how we remember and forget. The installation consists on large rolls of cotton with embroidered text fragments, poems, news items and articles that are all about memory. Some texts offer a glimpse into the memory of the artist: Van Hout also processed fragments from her diaries.

The embroidered strips of textile, which she made partly with the help of embroiderers, hang down in the patio of the museum from a height of six meters. The viewer can move through the work and, while wandering between the fragments of text, gets a glimpse of Van Hout’s fascination for human memory. Just as memories are not static, BACKUP has no fixed form. During the exhibition, some cotton bars are rolled up and others are unveiled. In addition, Van Hout complements its installation with newly embroidered texts. Every Wednesday she is working in the museum, where the visitor can follow her own process and ask questions.

The memory is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Van Hout and runs through her oeuvre like a red thread. Since 1996 she has been working on artworks on this theme, under the umbrella title Art of Memory. Contained in textile works, ceramics, paintings, drawings and books Van Hout depicts all possible aspects of the memory. Van Hout’s work is included in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, CODA Apeldoorn and in numerous private and corporate collections.
